Atlantic bluefin tuna protection mooted
*

The next meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora will be held in Qatar in March to discuss whether to list Atlantic bluefin tuna as a regulated species.

Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau today told lawmakers once the proposal is adopted at the conference, Hong Kong will follow the decision and amend the scope of control of the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals & Plants Ordinance.

In November the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department told traders and restaurant operators of, and consulted them on, the proposal of including bluefin tuna under the convention's control.

"The parties were also informed the CITES Conference of the Parties will be held in March and the international community has expressed concern over the conservation of bluefin tuna," Mr Yau added.
