Red tide sighted south of Lantau
*

Marine Department staff observed a red tide south of Lantau Island near Tong Fuk on June 29 that dissipated the next day, an interdepartmental red tide working group reported today.

The red tide was formed by non-toxic Gyrodinium instriatum which is seldom seen in Hong Kong waters.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
