Forecaster's delight: A course aimed at local weather enthusiasts will include basics such as how to classify cloud formations.

The Hong Kong Observatory is organising a weather observation course in May to introduce local weather enthusiasts to basics such as observing and classifying clouds.

Weather affects different walks of life. Looking at the sky, clouds of different shapes  change according to weather conditions and the season. From these observations, you can probably tell what the current weather is like or even predict short-term changes.

"Appreciating the weather through observation is the first step in weather forecasting. This course will introduce the basics of weather observation such as cloud observation and classification. Participants will also be able to observe the weather themselves under the guidance of Observatory staff," said the observatory's Chief Scientific Assistant Lam Kai-bun.

Mr Lam, who will be one of the course lecturers, said the course is particularly suitable for people fond of outdoor activities. A better understanding of the weather will enable them to respond properly when their activities are affected by weather changes.

To be held on the mornings of May 22 and 29, the course will be conducted in Cantonese. The fee is $195 per person. Those interested are invited to check out details and enrol here.
