September was wetter than usual. The monthly rainfall of 394 millimetres was more than 30% above the normal figure of 300mm.
However, the accumulated rainfall since the beginning of the year, 1,843mm, was still about 8% below the normal figure of 2,007mm for the same period.
Four tropical cyclones occurred in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea during the month.
Among them, Typhoon Dujuan approached from the east and came within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong on September 2.
It skirted the north of Hong Kong about 30km from the observatory that evening, forcing the Increasing Gale or Storm Signal No 9 to be issued for the first time since 1999.
