Restaurant receipts down 8% in 2002

Total receipts of restaurants and the wholesale trade last year fell 8% over a year earlier while hotels and retail trade dipped 6% and 4% respectively.

 

The Census & Statistics Department said total receipts of import and export trade remained virtually unchanged. For all these sectors taken together, total receipts were slightly down by 1%.

 

In the restaurants sector, total receipts amounted to $62 billion. Gross surplus accounted for 3.6% of total receipts, 0.3 of a percentage point higher than in 2001.

 

For the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $150 billion, with a gross surplus of 3.3%. This ratio was 0.2 of a percentage point higher than in 2001.

 

The hotels industry saw $14 billion total receipts last year. Gross surplus accounted for 19% of total receipts, 4.9 percentage points higher than in 2001.

 

In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $199 billion, with a gross surplus of 5.3%.  This was 1 percentage point higher than in 2001.

 

Total receipts in the import and export trade amounted to $1,879 billion. Gross surplus accounted for 6.8% of total receipts, 0.6 of a percentage point higher than in 2001.
