Operation Skyfit aims to attract visitors
*

The Airport Authority has launched a multi-million-dollar revitalisation package aimed at stimulating traffic and attracting travellers back to Hong Kong.

The package, announced less than 48 hours after the World Health Organisation lifted its Hong Kong travel advisory, comprises the following eight initiatives.

* Joint Advertising Campaign

The authority will launch a global advertising campaign with its airline partners that promotes Hong Kong International Airport as a safe, secure and healthy airport.

"Health is now a cornerstone of our airport operations," said the authority's Chairman Dr Victor Fung. "We want the airlines to tell their passengers that they are flying to a very safe and healthy airport."

* Recovery Stimulation Programme

Airlines that reinstate cancelled flights will get discounted landing charges. The more passengers they bring in, the higher the discount, ranging from 10% to 50%.

"We believe that SARS is well under control in Hong Kong and we should do the right thing to speed up the pace of recovery," Dr Fung said.

* Welcome Back Shopping Spree & "Win a Car" Lucky Draw

All passengers can enjoy attractive shopping discounts and a chance to win a lucky draw. The top prize is a brand-name private car; other prizes include cash coupons for $2,800 to be drawn once a week through the month of July.

* Welcome Back by Rolls Royce Motor Cars

Lucky arriving passengers will win free rides into town in a Rolls Royce, countesy of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' owners in Hong Kong, plus airport porter service from the arrivals hall.

* Airport Guided Tour

Transit passengers will be offered free tours of the facilities in the restricted area. Attractions include a panoramic view from the air traffic control tower, the inside view of the world's largest cargo facility, the bird-control activity on the airfield, and a demonstration of Customs' sniffer dogs.

* National Fairs

Passenger terminal exhibitions will showcase different countries to which Hong Kong International Airport has connections, with their national flags flying high.

* Photo Competition

A photo competition with the theme of "smiling faces" will launch in July. Winning entries will be displayed at prominent locations of the passenger terminal to welcome arriving passengers.

* Operation UNITE

The Airport Authority supports Operation UNITE and will host a one-day function at the airport to demonstrate Hong Kong people's solidarity. Details will be announced soon.

"All of us at HKIA are geared up to offer travellers a warm welcome from the moment they step off their planes," Dr Fung said.

He added that the authority and its business partners were confident that passengers would rebuild their confidence in air travel and return to Hong Kong in droves.
