Re-launch outline to be drawn up in 2 weeks: FS

*

Public views on the Government's plan to re-launch Hong Kong's economy after the SARS outbreak are being invited.

The Financial Secretary made the announcement today saying an outline of the re-launch programme will be drawn up within two weeks.

Speaking in the Legislative Council, Antony Leung said $1 billion has been reserved in the $11.8 billion economic-relief package for promoting Hong Kong.

However, he stressed that community resources also play an important part in the re-launch programme.

Noting that the re-launch will be divided into three phases, Director of Information Services Yvonne Choi said the Government will focus its efforts in containing the virus during the first phase.

During the second phase, the Government will restore local and international confidence in Hong Kong through organising large-scale activities such as concerts.

It will also ensure that international exhibitions and conferences, which have been scheduled to be held in Hong Kong, will stick to their original schedules, she said. The Government will also try to attract more international bodies to choose Hong Kong as the venue for their activities.

The Government also plans to organise international medical seminars.

During the third phase, international extravaganzas will be held, and overseas politicians and business tycoons will be invited to visit Hong Kong.

The Government will also introduce some special offers and organise special activities for overseas tourists.

In response to some legislators' requests for immediate re-launch measures, Mr Leung stressed that a premature re-launch would be a waste of resources.
