Starting December 1, employees who produce medical certificates from registered Chinese medicine practitioners will be entitled to sickness allowance, says Permanent Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Matthew Cheung.

A change in the Employment Ordinance now recognises the registered Chinese medicine practitioner for the purpose of employees' benefits' entitlement.

Mr Cheung said the amendment will cover sickness allowance, maternity protection and long-service payments. It was initiated to meet public expectations and strengthen employees' protection.

He also advised employers to prepare for the changes so their employees may enjoy the statutory benefits.
