The Government will work out feasible measures to help teachers better focus on teaching and improve education quality after the Committee on Teachers' Work submits its recommendations to relieve teachers' workload within this year, Secretary for Education & Manpower Professor Arthur Li says.
In a written reply to the lawmakers today, Professor Li said the committee engaged a consultant to conduct a survey on the work of teachers in Hong Kong from April to July. It has been visiting primary and secondary schools in different districts and meeting education bodies since April.
He stressed the committee will look into the nature of teaching jobs in public sector schools and the work they entail from an objective perspective, to identify improvement measures to allow teachers to concentrate more on teaching.
Professor Li said measures to simplify the school-based assessment came into effect on April 11.
The move is expected to create more room for teachers in teaching, enhance operational flexibility, reduce the lesson time needed for the assessments, and alleviate the workload of, and pressure on, teachers, he said.
At the same time, this will help enhance students' interest and confidence in learning, and develop a conscientious, responsible and self-motivated approach towards their studies, he said, adding reduced pressure from examinations will also make learning a more relaxing and pleasurable experience.
