Trainees showcase new-found skills

Skills Upgrading Scheme trainees have showcased their new-found talent at a two-day carnival in Causeway Bay, raising funds for the Community Chest.

The carnival, being held at the East Point Road and Great George Street Pedestrian Precinct this weekend, is organised by the Education & Manpower Bureau. Booths and marquees set up by the scheme's trainees give the public a better understanding of their industries.

Other programmes include singing, hairdressing demonstrations, kung fu performances, drama, food and beverages and games booths.

Speaking at the launch ceremony today, Deputy Secretary for Education & Manpower Edward Yau said the trainees, who have benefited from Government subsidies, deserved praise for their charitable generosity.

The scheme's promotion ambassador Nancy Sit urged employers and employees to support the scheme. She encouraged more in-service workers to pursue continuing education and upgrade their skills.

The scheme provides training to workers with lower educational attainment, to enhance their employability and competitiveness in the labour market. It now covers 23 industries, has offered more than 500 courses benefiting over 140,000 workers.
