A handbook has been published to remind schools to step up precautionary measures on avian influenza, Secretary for Education & Manpower Professor Arthur Li says. The handbook provides schools with guidelines and information on contingency measures.
As for the suspected case of avian influenza involving a dead bird found at Diocesan Boys' School, the school management has thoroughly cleansed the premises. It has been asked to inform the Department of Health and the Education & Manpower Bureau should students or staff fall ill in the next two weeks.
Last year, the bureau issued a circular memorandum calling on schools to take precautionary measures against avian influenza. They must not keep poultry on the school premises and should refrain from keeping live birds. They should establish barriers to prevent students from touching live birds and avoid organising activities that may expose children to them.
Schools should call 1823 for advice on handling any sick, wounded or dead birds found. The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department will collect birds for laboratory examination where necessary.
If any students or staff develop respiratory symptoms they should consult their doctor promptly. For more health advice click here.
