Top of the class: The Hong Kong team members show their awards from the 36th International Physics Olympiad in Spain. |
Hong Kong students have won one gold medal, one silver, two bronze and an honourable mention in the 36th International Physics Olympiad in Spain, the Education & Manpower Bureau says.
This was the first time that all Hong Kong team members netted an award at the Olympiad.
Chief Curriculum Development Officer for Gifted Education Chan Pui-tin said tem members were selected from the beneficiaries of the bureau's 'Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme'.
They received nine months' intensive training and tackled many challenges before getting through the final selection.
University collaboration pays off
Introduced in 2001, the scheme provides a series of structured enhancement programmes in sciences, mathematics and leadership skills to develop gifted students' potential.
Mr Chan said in recent years, the scheme has expanded the scope of training and activities are organised in collaboration with tertiary institutions to cater for different students' attributes and needs.
The bureau jointly organised the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2004 with the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and Physical Society of Hong Kong last year.
As one of the measures to nurture students gifted in physics, participants with outstanding performances in the competition were selected to take part in a series of physics enhancement programmes conducted by the university's Department of Physics.
Physics talents nurtured
After intensive training, the five most outstanding students were selected to represent Hong Kong in the Olympiad, from July 3 to 12, in which more than 70 teams took part.
The Olympiad aims to foster friendly international relationships with fellow physicists all over the world; to nurture young people gifted in physics; and to promote physics education.
The following is the list of Hong Kong winners:
*Gold: Tsui Lok Man of Sing Yin Secondary School;
*Silver: Cheung Ka Hei of Wah Yan College (Hong Kong);
*Bronze: Lai Kai Tsun of Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School and Cheng Wa Wing of Kwun Tong Maryknoll College; and *Honourable Mention: Yeung Tim Wai of Carmel Secondary School.
