Dream team: The Hong Kong team - Pong Yi-ting, Leung Ching-man, Anna Poon and Linda Hui.

A team of four talented secondary school girls have won three bronze medals for Hong Kong at the 3rd China Mathematical Olympiad for Girls in Nanchang, Jiangxi.

This is the best performance by Hong Kong students in this contest. Hong Kong grabbed two bronze medals in the first olympiad, and a bronze in the second.

The Hong Kong team was made up of Pui Ching Middle School's Pong Yi-ting, St Stephen's Girls' College's Leung Ching-man, and Ying Wa Girls' School's Linda Hui and STFA Leung Kau Kui College's Anna Poon.

Interactive competition

Held between August 10 and 15, the olympiad was hosted by the China Mathematical Society Olympiad Committee.

The main theme of the competition was to foster girls' interest and initiative in mathematics and open up a new arena for them to advance through competition and interaction with their talented counterparts.

The event provided valuable opportunities for the Hong Kong contestants to get better acquainted with their motherland through learning and interacting with gifted peers from different provinces. These experiences helped boost their sense of national identity.

The team members were selected among the beneficiaries of Education & Manpower Bureau's Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.

Since its inception in 2000, the scheme has provided structured enhancement programmes in sciences, mathematics, and leadership and interpersonal skills to assist participants in developing their potential.
