Smooth sailing: Public transport services were adequate to meet demand on the first school day.

Traffic conditions on the first school day were generally smooth and public transport services adequate to meet demand, the Transport Department says.

Activating its emergency transport co-ordination centre at 6am, the department closely monitored traffic conditions and transport services. About 80 staff were deployed to man the centre or monitor the situation on site.

While the traffic pattern will need some time to stabilise, students are reminded to allow more time for travel.

For those travelling to and from outlying islands, they should check ferry schedules and vessel types to be used on their intended trips beforehand.

The department will continue monitoring traffic and public transport in the coming few days and maintain close contact with operators.

Motorists are urged to avoid school areas where possible congestion may occur in the coming days.
