Environmental awareness: Hong Chi Morninghill School in Tuen Mun was named Champion of the Container Plant Display Section in the Secondary School Category for this stunning entry.

Fifty-four schools were awarded Green School Project Awards at a prize presentation this morning, in recognition of their efforts to make Hong Kong cleaner and more green.

Since its introduction in 2000, the number of schools participating in the Leisure & Cultural Services Department Green School Projects Scheme has more than doubled, to 665 from 312.

The "Green School Project Scheme" is one of the LCSD's campaigns to promote environmental awareness among young people. It provides cash subsidies to schools to plant trees and flowers on campuses and to organise green activities. Outstanding projects are recognised through the "Green School Project Awards".

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, Assistant Director of Leisure &Cultural Services Eddy Yau said he was pleased that the Scheme was growing more popular, and he was impressed with the projects' high standards.

"Both teachers and students are working very hard to make campus environments greener and more beautiful," he said.

Mr Yau said that the LCSD endeavoured to build Hong Kong into a green metropolis not only through planting and beautification schemes, but also by organising such educational and community activities to promote a green culture.

Other officiating guests at the prize presentation ceremony included Principal Assistant Secretary for Education and Manpower Ma Siu-leung and the Honorary President of the Institute of Horticulture, Hong Kong, Stephen Lee.
