The Voting by Imprisoned Persons Ordinance provisions removing restrictions on a prisoner's right to vote and the disqualification of people who have been convicted of certain election-related or bribery offences from voting in elections, took effect today.
The amendment regulations Electoral Affairs Commission made to provide for the detailed practical arrangements for prisoners to register as voters, and for prisoners and persons remanded, detained or arrested who are registered voters, also took effect.
Other law provisions mainly on the registration of prisoners as electors came into operation July 3.
The bureau said there is now a clear and integral legal framework for prisoners to register as voters and for electors in custody to vote in elections.
