Hong Kong's population reached 6,985,200 in mid-2008, up by 59,300 or 0.9% on on the same period last year, the Census & Statistics Department says.

Births and the inflow of one-way permit holders were key constituents of the rise. The population's natural increase was 34,100, resulting from 75,200 babies born to both Hong Kong and non-Hong Kong residents and 41,100 deaths. The period also saw a net movement of 25,200 residents.

The ratios of births and deaths to overall population growth were 127% and 69%. The inflow of one-way permit holders was 39,100 and outflow was 13,900. Their ratios to the overall population rise were 66% and 23%.

Among the total population 6,768,800 were usual residents and 216,400 mobile residents. The population figure does not include visitors. As at mid-2008 there were 338,400 visitors.

The department also revised the provisional figures for the 2007 year-end population to 6,952,800 with 6,727,000 usual residents and 225,800 mobile residents. The population growth rate from end-2006 to end-2007 was revised to 0.6%.
