Chinese University Professor Wong Wing-shing has been seconded to the Innovation & Technology Commission as science advisor for two years, from September 1.

He will succeed Professor Vincent Shen who left the commission last month after three years.

Prof Wong will provide specialist advice on matters related to innovation and technology development in the IT and electronics fields.

As science advisor, he will also tender technical advice to senior levels of Government, the Communications & Technology Branch, and to the Council of Advisors on Innovation & Technology.

Acting Commissioner for Innovation & Technology Sarah Kwok said she is pleased and honoured to have Prof Wong's talents in the Government. He will strengthen its technological capabilities and enrich it with his extensive research and industrial experience.

Mrs Kwok thanked Prof Shen for his contribution to the commission.

Prof Wong has a strong background in wireless systems and internet applications.

After obtaining his PhD at Harvard University, he worked in a world-renowned US research institution in telecoms and networking for more than nine years. He was elected an Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Fellow last year.

He returned to Hong Kong in 1992 to join Chinese University and is currently a professor of Information Engineering and the chairman of the university's Department of Information Engineering.

He was a member of the Radio Spectrum Advisory Committee of the Office of the Telecommunications Authority from 1996 up until last month.
