Secretary for Transport & Logistics Lam Sai-hung today embarked on a two-day visit to Shenzhen to better understand its latest developments in traffic and transport management as well as autonomous vehicles (AVs).
In the morning, Mr Lam called on member of the Shenzhen Municipal Government Party Members Group Zhang Liwei to discuss how to accelerate the transport networks interconnection of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), strengthen co-operation in promoting smart transport, and co-ordinate the regulations and benchmarks of AVs in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
He then called on Shenzhen Municipal Government Office of Port of Entry & Exit Chief Wang Gang and received an update on the planning and construction of the new Huanggang Port. They also discussed further enhancing cross-boundary traffic and transport at the boundary control points between the two cities.
Mr Lam visited the Shenzhen Transportation Operation Command Center in the afternoon, where he was briefed by Shenzhen Municipality Transport Bureau Deputy Director General Xu Wei.
He learnt about Shenzhen's innovative traffic and transport management model and integrated traffic monitoring platform which have greatly enhanced the effectiveness of traffic operation and management as well as reduced the workload of manual inspections through intelligent traffic management.
The transport chief also toured the headquarters of Huawei, a provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices, in Shenzhen.
He viewed an exhibition hall which showcased the company's digital transformation and was briefed by a Huawei representative on the functionalities and technological development of its integrated smart traffic control platform.
Mr Lam said: “To meet the growing cross-boundary transport and mobility needs, facilitate deep integration within the GBA and promote coordinated regional economic development, it is necessary to further enhance the interoperability of the transport network in the region. Shenzhen has valuable experience in smart mobility which Hong Kong should learn from.”
The Transport Department recently put forward four transport strategy concepts of the Traffic & Transport Strategy Study, including the promotion of AVs, to be progressively taken forward next year with a view to promulgating the Transport Strategy Blueprint in 2025.
“We will suitably apply Shenzhen's experience in smart mobility in the light of the situation in Hong Kong to enhance our Transport Strategy Blueprint,” he added.
