January warm with cold interludes

The Hong Kong Observatory said the city’s weather was warmer than usual due to a weak northeast monsoon over Guangdong. It reported a monthly mean temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, 0.5 degrees above normal.

 

The month was drier than usual with a total rainfall of 18.2 mm, about 45% below the normal figure.

 

With sunny periods on January 14, the temperature rose to 24.7 degrees Celsius during the day, the highest of the month.

 

With the arrival of a replenishment of the dry northeast monsoon, the weather turned generally fine and dry on January 27. Local weather remained fine with cold mornings over the next three days. The temperature fell to 9.8 degrees Celsius on the morning of January 29, the lowest of the month.

 

There were frost reports in Tai Po and parts of the northeastern New Territories on the mornings of January 29 and 30.

 

There was no tropical cyclone over the South China Sea and the western North Pacific during the month.
