Green data centre workshop held

June 29, 2022

An Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) workshop was held online for participants to exchange views on the best practices, challenges and application of innovative technology in data centres.

Delivering his opening remarks yesterday, Secretary for the Environment K S Wong pointed out that as the energy demand for data centres, driven by digital technology advancement, will continue to grow, concerted efforts of the Government and the industry in promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy are therefore essential. Through hosting the APEC online workshop, Hong Kong could support the establishment of energy efficient and resilient data centres.

As Hong Kong is striving to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050, the city’s decarbonisation strategies and targets, as well as the climate adaptation and resilience measures, are mapped out in Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050, he added.

Electrical & Mechanical Services Department Assistant Director and APEC Energy Working Group deputy lead shepherd Barry Chu, who gave the closing remarks today, thanked the speakers for sharing their ideas on promoting energy efficiency, resilience and renewable energy adoption in data centres, which is conducive to sustaining competitiveness and growth.

The energy intensity in Hong Kong has decreased over 30%, being one of the best performers in terms of energy intensity reduction among APEC member economies, he noted.

Joined by over 100 delegates and experts from six APEC member economies, the workshop, proposed by Hong Kong, was an APEC-funded project. It aimed to encourage member economies to improve the energy efficiency and resilience of data centres, and the utilisation of renewable energy in their operations in order to accelerate APEC’s move towards its goals of reducing energy intensity and adopting renewable energy.
