Abnormal test results probed

June 22, 2022

The Department of Health has noticed suspected abnormalities in the COVID-19 nucleic acid test results for outbound travellers at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port and instructed the service provider to investigate.

Service provider Sunrise Diagnostic Centre reported yesterday that 136 outbound travellers tested positive or indeterminate at the port and were therefore not allowed to leave Hong Kong according to the prevailing testing arrangement.

The department's personnel noticed that the number of cases that tested positive or indeterminate far exceeded that of previous days and requested the service provider to follow up.

That batch of samples was subsequently sent to the central laboratory for confirmatory tests. Most of the samples tested negative, whereas three of the samples tested positive and nine were indeterminate.

The service provider suspects there may be some environmental contamination in the laboratory set up at the port concerned that caused the abnormal test results.

The service provider has been instructed to thoroughly disinfect the laboratory and relevant equipment so it can resume normal operation today. It was also instructed to take follow-up action and submit an investigation report as soon as practicable this week.
