1 vaccination case reported

March 13, 2021

The Department of Health announced that as of 4pm today, in the past 24 hours, it received one report from the Hospital Authority regarding a case admitted to the intensive care unit with a suspected serious adverse event following COVID-19 vaccination.

The 63-year-old man, who has a history of atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, polycythemia and alcoholic fatty liver, started to have generalised malaise on March 10.

His condition worsened and he attended North District Hospital today.

The man was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit for further treatment with a provisional diagnosis of acute stroke. He is now in critical condition.

He received a dose of CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccination at Yuen Wo Road Sports Centre community vaccination centre in Sha Tin four days before admission and there was no record that the man complained of feeling unwell during observation at the vaccination centre.

The department said it immediately contacted the authority to obtain more information for investigation and assessment.

It will pass the case to the Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation for a causality assessment.

The assessment result will be released in a timely manner.

Separately, the authority informed the department that an 80-year-old man who received treatment at Caritas Medical Centre and was later transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital had passed away this afternoon due to ischaemic bowel disease. This case was announced on March 7.

It was also informed that a 67-year-old man, involved in a case announced on March 11, who received treatment at Kwong Wah Hospital passed away this afternoon.
