Kindergartens to receive grants

August 27, 2020

The Education Bureau will implement two pilot schemes for the renovation and relocation grants in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years to help kindergartens under the kindergarten education scheme improve their school environments.

Together with a website enhancement grant set for the 2020-21 school year for kindergartens which have joined the scheme, all the grants will incur about $75 million in estimated total funding.

The bureau issued circular memoranda to scheme kindergartens today announcing the details.

Each kindergarten approved for the relocation grant will receive $1.5 million while each kindergarten approved for the renovation grant will receive $500,000. It is estimated that 50 kindergartens will be provided with the renovation grant in each of the next two school years.

The bureau will take into account the kindergartens’ operating standards, financial position and sustainability as well as genuine needs, the works’ urgency and other factors when vetting and approving applications.

Additionally, non-Chinese speaking children’s parents are encouraged to send their children to kindergartens with an immersive Chinese language environment as early as possible to facilitate their early exposure to and learning of the Chinese language.

The one-off website enhancement grant aims to assist kindergartens in enhancing their school websites to provide both Chinese and English school information for parents.

All scheme kindergartens should provide basic school information in both Chinese and English, including information on support for non-Chinese speaking children.

The bureau will provide each school with a $10,000 grant. Schools that can provide all information on their websites in both Chinese and English will be provided with a $20,000 grant.
