Renowned contemporary actors will reprise the roles of golden-era Cantonese opera stars in a series of shows in April to celebrate Hong Kong City Hall's 50th anniversary and Tuen Mun Town Hall's 25th anniversary.
During the 1950s, Hong Kong witnessed a golden age of traditional Cantonese opera, with many actors in lead roles commanding the scene. Notable names included Yam Kim-fai, Ho Fei-fan, Lam Kar-sing, Mak Bing-wing, Chan Kam-tong and Sun Ma Sze-tsang. This series pays tribute to that golden era.
Shows that will be staged at Hong Kong City Hall include "Romance of the Phoenix Tower" on April 1; "The Injustice Done to Dou'e" on April 2; "The Romantic Monk" on April 3 (Tuesday) and "The Tragedy of Two Patriotic Brothers" on April 4.
Shows that will be staged at Tsuen Wan Town Hall include "Crying on the Erlang Bridge" on April 7, "A Sword of Loyalty" on April 8, "Wong Fei-fu's Rebellion" on April 18, and "The Tragedy of Princess Lok Cheung" on April 20.
Lyrics and dialogue in all shows will be supplemented with Chinese and English surtitles. All shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets are $100 to $340 at URBTIX.
Three meet-the-artist sessions will be conducted in Cantonese at 2.30pm on March 31, 7.30pm on April 5, and 2.30pm on April 7, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
