Must-see movies to be shown
September 19, 2011
One-hundred must-see Hong Kong movies will be shown at the Film Archive from October to celebrate the venue’s 10th anniversary.
The archive and a panel of six experts have chosen 100 Hong Kong titles from 1916 to 1999. The films were selected mostly on artistic grounds, with some chosen based for their historical significance.
It is hoped the selection encourages more discussion on and research of Hong Kong cinema.
The selected films include Lee Sun-fung’s
It Was a Cold Winter Night (1955), Tsui Harks's comedy
Shanghai Blues (1984), Kam Kwok-leung’s
Wonder Women (1987), Fung Fung’s
The Kid (1950) starring Bruce Lee, along with Lee’s
The Way of the Dragon (1972).
They will be shown from October onwards. Each month, two films, together with post-screening talks, will be screened on the second and fourth Saturdays at the Film Archive’s Cinema. Renowned actor Simon Yam has been appointed programme ambassador.
