Committee to discuss way forward: CS

September 04, 2012
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam said the Committee on Implementation of Moral & National Education can discuss many aspects of this subject, including how to teach and learn it, and the way forward after the three-year initiation period.

Speaking to the media today, Mrs Lam said the committee will listen to people’s views, adding there is room for discussion and the Government will respond positively to the committee's suggestions after the discussions.

She said the Government and protesters have a common objective, which is to nurture the students to have the right attitude, care for society and the capacity to distinguish right from wrong.

She reiterated that the question should not be simply whether the subject will be withdrawn, adding it is important to ensure so-called 'brain-washing' will not happen in teaching.

The initiation period need not be prolonged as schools can choose to implement national education anytime within the period, she added.

Mrs Lam noted a protester had been sent to hospital, and she hoped she would get well soon.
