37.7% of exam takers meet uni requirements
July 19, 2012
The Examinations & Assessment Authority said 37.7 % of day-school candidates in the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or 26,431 candidates, have met the general entrance requirements for local four-year undergraduate university programmes this year.
These students have obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies.
The results to be released tomorrow will be expressed in terms of five levels of performance, of which 5 is the highest and 1 the lowest. The top 10% of candidates scoring level 5 will be awarded a 5**, and the following 30% will be awarded a 5*. Level 4 would be approximately equivalent to Grade D in the Advanced Level Examination.
Speaking at a press conference today, the authority’s Secretary General Tong Chong-sze said 32 students have attained level 5** in six subjects, and five of them attained level 5** in seven subjects.
A total of 47,831 day-school candidates obtained level 2 or above in five subjects, including Chinese Language and English Language. They would be eligible to apply for sub-degree courses and civil-service appointments.
Mr Tong said 8.4% of the day-school candidates attained level 5 in Chinese Language and 7.7% achieved level 5 in English Language. In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 12.1% attained level 5. As for Liberal Studies, 7.7% of day-school candidates attained level 5 while 90.8% received level 2 or above.
This year, 73,074 candidates entered the first Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, of which 98.2% are school candidates presented by 532 schools.
Candidates are offered three categories of subjects in the examination. Category A includes new senior secondary subjects, category B, applied learning subjects, and category C, other language subjects. More than 90% of the school candidates registered for two to three subjects in addition to four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies.
The authority will continue to liaise with overseas education bodies and tertiary institutions to secure recognition for the examination. At present, more than 130 overseas institutions have provided admission information related to the examination, which is available on the authority’s
website.
The Public Examinations Information Centre and the Southorn Centre enquiry counter service hours will be extended during the results-release period to provide support for candidates.
