Social innovation institute to open

January 17, 2012

Hong Kong’s first Design Institute for Social Innovation will be set up next year. It will provide a creative exchange platform on topics related to design for social innovation.

The institute will be housed together with Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Design in the Jockey Club Innovation Tower, due for completion in mid-2013.

The 15-storey tower is the first permanent design in Hong Kong by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid.

The institute is supported by the Jockey Club Charities Trust.

At the announcement ceremony held today, the university's Professor Michael Siu showed his i-Give interactive donation system. It helps people make electronic donations and gives access to cyber rewards for donors, such as ringtones or wallpaper images.

Another invention is his Chinese chess for visually impaired people, which allows them to find and distinguish their chess pieces.
