Secretary for Education Michael Suen expects more secondary schools, including Government schools, to voluntarily cut the number of classes they teach.
The Government has called on schools to reduce their intake of students in an attempt to prevent closures in the wake of falling enrolments. The targeted schools are those having five classes in the same level.
Seven Tai Po secondary schools today signed a pledge to support the voluntary class reduction scheme in the next academic year.
“I am very glad that in Tai Po, we have got seven schools taking the initiative of coming out in the open, and saying they openly support this scheme,” Mr Suen said after today's signing ceremony. “We are hoping the other schools are taking an active step to consider whether they are joining or not.”
He said the Government secondary schools have decided to participate in the scheme but there are procedural steps to complete before they can join, and hopefully they can be solved in the next two weeks.
