Deputy prosecutor to study Benny Tai case

December 03, 2014

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen and Director of Public Prosecutions Keith Yeung have delegated to the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions David Leung the authority to handle Benny Tai’s surrender for his involvement in the Occupy Central movement.

The Department of Justice said the arrangement is to avoid any possible perception of bias or improper influence, as Mr Leung has no connection with anyone in the case.

Mr Yuen and Mr Yeung have known Mr Tai for many years as the three of them were classmates at the Hong Kong University Faculty of Law.

The department said it will ensure proper processes are followed in the conduct of the case, in strict accordance with the law and prosecution policy.
