The Security Bureau has issued a red outbound travel alert for Japan due to the country’s massive earthquake on Friday, Under Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok says, urging Hong Kong people to avoid going to areas affected by the disaster.

Two immigration officers have departed for Tokyo to provide assistance to Hong Kong residents there, and the Immigration Department has increased the capacity of its 24-hour hotline.

Speaking to reporters this evening, Mr Lai said the Chief Executive expressed his sympathy to the country and victims, adding the Emergency Monitoring & Support Centre has been activated to closely monitor the situation's development.

There are 22 Hong Kong tour groups comprising 477 people in Honshu and they are all safe. It is estimated that about 800 Hong Kong people are traveling in the country on their own. So far, the department has received 58 requests for help and five enquiries.

The department will join the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Tokyo and the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo to provide assistance to Hong Kong residents there. The embassy has set up a hotline - 03 - 3403 3064 - to offer assistance to Chinese citizens, including Hong Kong residents.

Hong Kong residents in Japan are urged to pay attention to their safety and keep abreast of relevant information. Any Hong Kong resident overseas may call the (852) 1868 hotline if they need assistance.
