The Day Camp for Geotechnical Engineers of Tomorrow, held today, gave students a basic grounding in geotechnical engineering, slope safety and the roles and duties of geotechnical engineers.
More than 120 junior secondary school students from 17 schools participated in the camp's lectures, experiments and a competition.
The Civil Engineering & Development Department organised the camp in collaboration with the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers to promote slope safety.
Speaking at the award presentation ceremony for the camp's competition, Director of Civil Engineering & Development Hon Chi-keung said the department’s Geotechnical Engineering Office has developed a comprehensive and highly regarded slope safety system which reduced landslide risk from man-made slopes by 75%.
Nevertheless, the adverse effect of extreme rainfall on slope stability in Hong Kong cannot be underestimated, and people should always stay vigilant against landslide risk, he added.
The camp’s highlight activity was a competition to build the tallest sand castle in which 28 teams participated.
