Total port cargo down 3%

Total port cargo throughput dropped 3% in 2012, to 269.3 million tonnes, compared with a year earlier, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.
Total port cargo throughput fell 6% year-on-year to 66.3 million tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2012, and within this total, inward and outward port cargo decreased 4% and 9% to 37.6 million tonnes and 28.7 million tonnes.
For 2012 as a whole, inward and outward port cargo dropped 2% and 4% to 154.7 million tonnes and 114.6 million tonnes.
Within port cargo, seaborne cargo fell 7% compared with a year earlier to 45.8 million tonnes, while river cargo fell 3% to 20.5 million tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Hong Kong handled 5.6 million TEUs of containers in the fourth quarter of 2012, a 9% year-on-year decrease.
Within this total, laden containers fell 9% to 4.8 million TEUs, while empty containers dropped 8% to 800,000 TEUs.
In 2012, Hong Kong handled 23.1 million TEUs of containers, a 5% decrease compared with 2011. Within this total, laden containers fell 5% to 19.7 million TEUs, while empty containers dropped 6% to 3.5 million TEUs.
