Future development:  Secretary for Development Paul Chan and Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung (both centre) visit a proposed site for public housing development in Sham Shui Po.

2 housing sites proposed

February 05, 2013
Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung and Secretary for Development Paul Chan visited two proposed sites for public housing development today.

The sites are an open space on Lai Chi Kok Road and Tonkin Street in Sham Shui Po, and on Choi Hing Road in Ngau Tau Kok.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Mr Cheung said the Government will increase land supply to meet housing demand.

The Sham Shui Po site is 2.3 hectares, where 2,300 public rental housing units can be completed in 2019. The Ngau Tau Kok site, currently zoned as a Government, Institution or Community site, has a gross site area of 8,700 square metres and a total floor area of 33,000 square metres. It is planned for Home Ownership Scheme development.

Mr Cheung said the Government has gathered support from the relevant District Councils, and they understand the need for public housing, whether for rental or Home Ownership Scheme use.

He said the Government will conduct a technical evaluation of transport infrastructure and environmental impacts before proceeding, introducing mitigation measures if necessary to ensure community facilities can serve the additional population.

Mr Cheung said the Government has been monitoring the property market, such as the mortgage-to-income ratio, and feels the market is too active. The administration will roll out measures should there be any fluctuation which might affect the economy, and financial and monetary system, he said, to maintain stable and healthy development of the property market.

Mr Chan said the Ngau Tau Kok site will be used for residential units rather than a school, as the Education Bureau said it had no plans to build one there. Another site will be allocated if needed in future, he added.

The site at Sham Shui Po will be developed for public housing after the tenancy agreement for a temporary golf driving range expires, Mr Chan said.
