Toll hike turned down

June 21, 2011
The Chief Executive-in-Council today rejected an application from the New Hong Kong Tunnel Company for a toll increase at the Eastern Harbour Crossing.

The tunnel company applied to hike tolls for cars and taxis by $10, or 40%, with a proportionate increase for other vehicles. However, the Transport & Housing Bureau said the company's justification for the increase was insufficient.

In assessing the application, the Government noted the strong financial position of the company, and its high internal rate of return.

The Legislative Council was consulted on the company's application on February 25 and March 28. Both occasions saw strong objection to the hike proposal.
