Building crackdown to start on serious breaches

June 13, 2011
Structures seriously breaching the law will take priority in the Government's crackdown on illegal building works in the New Territories.

This was the message from Secretary for Development Carrie Lam today, adding building inspectors will focus on structures with additional floors, excessive sizes, or an unauthorised work on top of another unauthorised work.

Given the large volume of unauthorised works on New Territories village houses, the Government will first differentiate the various categories of illegal structure.

The Government has outlined a certain category of amenities, small-scale items, which will be allowed to stay. However, enforcement action against serious breaches will go ahead.
