4,000 buildings to be checked

June 10, 2011
The Buildings Department will inspect 4,000 structures with cantilevered slab canopies from June 11. The exercise will take six weeks to complete.

The department today expressed great concern about the canopy collapse at the Winfield Industrial Building in Tuen Mun yesterday, which injured a person.

Department officers inspected the building after the incident and found loose parts at the spot where the canopy collapsed, which could have posed a danger to the public. A government contractor dealt with the problem overnight and the building was confirmed safe today.

Emergency works are continuing at the site, including the clearance of the remaining parts of the canopy, along with strengthening works, like the erection of props underneath the remaining canopy.

The department has launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
