Labour issues under discussion

January 16, 2016

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung says the Government will do its best to formulate a way forward on three important labour issues: retirement protection, the Mandatory Provident Fund offsetting mechanism and standard working hours.

Mr Cheung told reporters today that all three issues are being discussed, noting that a high level committee is deliberating standardising working hours and is expected to submit a report to the Government in a few months' time.

An intensive and extensive public consultation on Hong Kong’s retirement system - which includes the MPF offsetting mechanism - is underway until the middle of this year, he added.

Mr Cheung expects there should be a clear idea of the way forward on these issues by the end of this year.

He added that the Government has a comprehensive plan on elderly and rehabilitation services and will provide more than 20,000 additional service places in the next five to 10 years.
