Ethnic minorities' poverty discussed

(December 18, 2015)

The Poverty Commission discussed ethnic minorities' 2014 poverty situation at its meeting today.

Members noted the findings of an analysis on ethnic minority poverty conducted by the Government Economist and the Census & Statistics Department which will be published shortly.

Commission chairperson Carrie Lam briefed members on research into the issue from 1997 to 2014, and spoke with them about the discussion she had with the research team's representatives.

A commission task force will follow up on and explore the research recommendations and members' views, and will report to the commission in due course.

Members were also briefed on the retirement protection public engagement exercise. Consultation will begin later this month and will last for six months.

The Labour & Welfare Bureau will publicise the issue, while commission members and Government officials will attend forums and meet with stakeholders during the consultation period.
