3 relics declared monuments

October 23, 2015
Time of day

Time of day:  More than a century old, Signal Tower was built to a heavy classical Baroque design incorporating popular Edwardian decorative features of the time.

In memoriam

In memoriam:  The Race Course Fire Memorial's centre bay plaques combine both Western classical and traditional Chinese architectural elements.

Face value

Face value:  The Old Mental Hospital facade's early Baroque architecture is rare in Hong Kong, particularly as it was accurately constructed using local materials.

Blackhead Point Signal Tower in Tsim Sha Tsui, Race Course Fire Memorial in So Kon Po and Sai Ying Pun's Old Mental Hospital facade have been declared monuments.

The declarations, under the Antiquities & Monuments Ordinance, were gazetted today.

The three-storey, 42-foot-high Signal Tower in Signal Hill Garden, Tsim Sha Tsui, was built in 1907 by the Hong Kong Observatory to house a timeball apparatus and was used for signalling accurate time to mariners and citizens.

Race Course Fire Memorial on the hillside above Hong Kong Stadium in So Kon Po is the only memorial dedicated to those who died in the 1918 fire at Happy Valley Racecourse.

Completed in 1892, Old Mental Hospital at 2 High Street, Sai Ying Pun, was originally constructed as the Government Civil Hospital's medical staff quarters and was converted into wards for mentally ill female patients in 1939. Its facade is one of the oldest surviving structures testifying the development of mental care services in Hong Kong.
