More Taiwan egg imports banned

(January 09, 2015)

The Centre for Food Safety has banned egg imports from Pingtung County in Taiwan due to an avian influenza outbreak.

The decision was made today after Taiwanese authorities announced an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 sub-type avian influenza in the county.

Egg imports from Penghu County have been banned since November 2012, those from Hualien County from August 2013, and Yilan County eggs since December 2014.

Hong Kong does not import live poultry or poultry meat from Taiwan, but a small quantity of poultry eggs are imported.

The centre will monitor the situation.
