Health chief urges poultry calm

(January 03, 2015)

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man has called on poultry traders not to take drastic action over live chicken supply arrangements.

Speaking to reporters today, he urged traders to continue talks with the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department.

He said some local chicken stock will become overage if a consensus cannot be reached on their release into the market.

He said different stakeholders should work out an arrangement which is acceptable to all parties, while fulfilling stringent infection control requirements against avian influenza.

On the plan to release chickens into the city by some farmers, Dr Ko warned that releasing the birds without the department’s permission breaches licensing conditions.

On the agricultural policy consultation, Dr Ko said it is appropriate for society to discuss the issue as demand for locally produced agricultural products is rising and some people would like to pursue a farming career in Hong Kong.

An agricultural policy will also help maintain the diversity of the city’s economy and food sources, and provide land for farmers affected by development projects.
