Infected poultry contacts traced

(December 31, 2014)

The Centre for Health Protection is tracing one close contact and 77 other contacts to monitor their health conditions after samples of live chickens imported from the Mainland tested positive for avian influenza A virus.

The close contact is a poultry worker at Cheung Sha Wan Temporary Wholesale Poultry Market. He developed a sore throat but tested negative for influenza A virus.

Other contacts include a lorry driver who transported the live chicken consignment, poultry workers and staff from the market and Man Kam To Animal Inspection Station.

The poultry workers have increased risks because of prolonged exposure to live poultry, so the centre advised them to get vaccinated early.

Enhanced surveillance of suspected human cases in public and private hospitals is ongoing, the centre added.
