Infection control measures enhanced

October 20, 2014
Situation report

Situation report:  Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man (third left) chairs an interdepartmental meeting on infectious disease prevention and control.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man chaired an interdepartmental meeting today to discuss prevention and control measures against infectious diseases such as Ebola.

Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said after the meeting that the risk of bringing the Ebola virus to Hong Kong does exist and people should remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel to affected countries.

Dr Leung said the Government - after taking into account the World Health Organisation's latest recommendations and overseas epidemiological experience - will revise the reporting criteria of Ebola cases by lowering the body temperature of fever patients from 38 degrees Celsius to 37.5 degrees, to cover those who have a low-grade fever during the early stage of infection.

The centre will issue letters to doctors and private hospitals about the change in reporting criteria and ask for their support in reporting suspected cases promptly.
