Dengue fever advisory issued

September 23, 2014

The Centre for Health Protection today urged travellers to take precautions against Dengue fever, following an increase in activity in neighbouring areas.

Guangdong has registered 6,089 Dengue fever cases this year - 5,190 of which were from Guangzhou.

Taiwan has recorded 2,589 cases this year, with 999 recorded in September alone - 959 of them were in Kaohsiung.

The disease is also active in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Dengue fever is endemic in most Southeast Asian countries and travellers should protect themselves against mosquitoes whatever the season.

There have been 66 cases of the disease in Hong Kong so far this year – all of them were imported.
