Centre monitoring 2 new MERS cases

The Department of Health is monitoring two additional Middle East Respiratory Syndrome cases in Saudi Arabia.

 

According to the World Health Organisation, one is a man, aged 58, from eastern Saudi Arabia. He fell ill on February 2 and was hospitalised on February 4. He recovered and was discharged on February 24. He was reported to have had contact with animals.

 

The other is an 81-year-old woman from Riyadh who was hospitalised on February 2 and died on February 8. She did not have any known contact with animals before she fell ill.

 

The latest global number of confirmed cases has increased to 186, including 81 deaths.

 

The department will seek more information on the cases from the WHO and the relevant health authority.

 

No human infection with this virus has been identified in Hong Kong.
