Man critical with encephalitis
July 16, 2013
The Centre for Health Protection has launched an investigation into the year's first confirmed Japanese encephalitis case.
A 59-year-old man is in critical condition in Tuen Mun Hospital, after falling ill on June 20.
He tested positive for Japanese encephalitis, which is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes.
He lives in Tin Shui Wai. His home contact is asymptomatic.
The centre’s staff have interviewed the patient's neighbours and are arranging blood tests to see whether there are any further infections.
People can call 2125 1122 for enquiries.
Three Japanese encephalitis cases were reported last year, and one in 2011.
