2 old housing estates to be retained

July 03, 2013
The Government has no plan to redevelop the Wo Lok Estate in Kwun Tong, while Choi Hung Estate will be retained with necessary repairs, Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung said today.

In reply to a lawmaker’s query today, Prof Cheung said to address the strong demand for public rental housing, the Government and the Housing Authority explore all options to boost supply, including to examine aged public rental housing estates' redevelopment potential.

In considering the estates' clearance and redevelopment, the authority refers to the Comprehensive Structural Investigation Programme findings on structural safety and repair works' cost effectiveness.

He said Wo Lok Estate and Choi Hung Estate were included in the programme in 2005, and the investigations were completed in 2007 and 2006.

Prof Cheung said the two estates were deemed to be retained based on their structural conditions.

The authority will investigate the structural conditions of all estates that have undergone comprehensive structural investigation and are retained on a 15-year cycle, and to assess again whether these estates should be retained or redeveloped.
