Man's death investigated

May 21, 2013
The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a case of necrotising fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease, involving a 69-year-old man who died soon after infection.

The patient, who had underlying illnesses, was admitted to hospital with right leg swelling on May 18. He was transferred to the intensive care unit the following day and died today.

He tested positive for Vibrio vulnificus, a type of bacteria causing necrotising fasciitis.

The case will be referred to the Coroner for further investigation.

The centre reminded the public to avoid contact with dirty water when visiting wet markets, avoid exposure of open wounds or broken skin to seawater or salty water, wounds should be thoroughly cleaned and properly covered, and people should wear thick rubber gloves when handling raw shellfish.

People should seek medical advice promptly if symptoms and signs of infection, such as increasing redness, pain and swelling, develop.
